'We can move up to the next level': Arsene Wenger signs new Arsenal contract and promises changes this summer

Arsène Wenger was challenged to end Arsenal’s agonising wait for Premier League and European glory on Wednesday after being entrusted with a new two-year contract as manager.

Wenger and the club’s board finally drew a line under the most turbulent season of his 21-year reign by confirming he would remain at the Emirates until at least 2019.

Arsenal also announced Wenger and chief executive Ivan Gazidis had conducted a full review of their on and off-field activities “to build a sustained title challenge”, prompting minority shareholder Alisher Usmanov to warn that the Frenchman’s “legacy will be tarnished” unless he receives more support.

With both club and manager having refused to bow to growing fan unrest by ending what Wenger described on Wednesday as a love affair, he will now be under more pressure than ever to succeed where he has so often failed.

In the rarest of public comments, majority shareholder Stan Kroenke said: “Our ambition is to win the Premier League and other major trophies in Europe.

“It’s what the fans, players, staff, manager and board expect and we won’t rest until that is achieved. Arsène is the best person to help us make that happen. He has a fantastic track record and has our full backing.”

Kroenke kept faith with Wenger following a season in which Arsenal won the  FA Cup for a record 13th time but failed to qualify for the Champions League for the first time since his first full campaign in charge, and were humiliated 10-2 on aggregate in the competition by Bayern Munich. It appears unthinkable the Frenchman could survive again if he fails to respond with a genuine title tilt within the next two seasons, which on Wednesday he underlined his commitment to delivering.

“I love this club and I am looking forward to the future with optimism and excitement,” Wenger said. “We are looking at what we do well and how we can be stronger everywhere.

“This is a strong group of players and, with some additions, we can be even more successful. We’re committed to mounting a sustained league challenge and that will be our focus this summer and next season. I am grateful to have the support of the board and Stan in doing everything we can to win more trophies. It’s what we all want and I know it’s what our fans around the world demand.”

Wenger and Gazidis’s review identified that changes were required both in terms of playing and non-playing staff if this was to be achieved. “First of all, we have a very heavy squad at the moment, so maybe we might lose some players,” Wenger said.

“We want to keep the strength we have and build on that. We will work very hard to find the additions of top, top quality. I believe that our squad is very strong and we will only look for top-class people who can strengthen our team now.

“We want to perform better in every department, so of course we want to have the best team around the team.”

Usmanov, who had a £1 billion takeover bid rejected last week, responded to Wednesday’s news by calling on Kroenke to give the manager more support. “He has a great opportunity to deliver the success that the fans deserve and the legacy that his long contribution merits,” Usmanov said in a statement.

“However, without the right support there remains a real risk that his legacy will be tarnished. If the support is not forthcoming, we stand ready to step in and do everything we can to deliver success on and off the field.”

The first player to react to the new contract was Santi Cazorla, who told Spanish radio station Cadena SER: “He is key to this club. He hadn’t told us anything [regarding a new deal] but we are all delighted. The coach has done great things for the club, not just now but in the past. The club values his career. He has done miracles.”

The fan response, meanwhile, was mixed at the end of a campaign plagued by protests – including banners towed by aeroplanes – and empty seats at the Emirates Stadium.

Wenger called on supporters to unite, saying: “The message to the fans is in aid of the club. Let’s be together to support our players, to support the club and all give our absolute best to be at the level that we want to be. We can move up to the next level, I’m convinced of that, by having faith in the way we want to play football and by supporting the players we have already.”

Gazidis added: “Remember, the motto of this football club is Victoria Concordia Crescit, ‘Victory Through Harmony’. We need to restore that harmony by getting behind the team to achieve success together. That’s where we have a chance.”

Branding “absolutely not true” claims that Arsenal’s ambition was simply to finish in the top four, Gazidis said: “I want this football club, Arsène wants this football club, our board and our owner want this football club to be competing to win the Premier League. And that’s my hope for next season.”

He added: “There is no complacency anywhere at this club. Our goal is to compete for and win trophies here and in Europe.”

Gazidis, who had called on Arsenal’s season to be a “catalyst for change” amid plans to appoint a sporting director to work with Wenger, denied the board had made a “sentimental” decision.

He added: “When you look at the world of football, and you think about the great candidates that there are – and there are many great coaching candidates in the world and Arsenal is a club that all of them would want to work for because of the things we represent in football – but when you look around and make that assessment, you don’t find any better candidates than Arsène Wenger.”

Who should Arsenal buy?

What should they build? HOW DO THEY GET BETTER? Wenger knows* but for now, let's look at some potential transfer targets that may or may not exist.

Wenger's seasons ranked

Don't get too excited about incoming transfers...

First of all, we look at the top, top quality available. We have seen in the recent games against Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United that we are a very strong team. For us it’s very important that we only consider the players who can really make a difference, no matter where it is.

That is the exact same line Arsenal have trotted out for about 20 years.

What other changes do you expect? Maybe on the non-playing side for example...

On that front, we always want to be better. We live in a very competitive world where everybody tries to get better.

Meet the new Wenger! Exactly the same as the old one.

Wenger believes contract speculation hindered the team

"I believe the outside uncertainty over my situation had an impact on the team," says Wenger in that Q&A.

Wenger Q&A

Arsenal have published a video on their website featuring an interview with Wenger on his new deal.

I’m happy and excited. Happy because I can work where I love to be. As well because this club cherishes the values I love. I’m excited because I believe that our end of season is a big springboard to go for more. We have created a dynamic that is very positive and we want to build on that and transfer that positive end of season [form] to the new season.

The message to the fans is in aid of the club. Let’s be together to support our players, to support the club and all give our absolute best to be at the level that we want to be. We can move up to the next level, I’m convinced of that, by having faith in the way we want to play football and by supporting the players we have already. Of course we’ll try to strengthen our squad to be stronger next season, but we want to be faithful to the way we want to play the game. We want to support this way [of playing] all together.

Picking apart the announcement

Arsenal didn't have any options but to renew Wenger's contract. There are no suitable candidates available, the calm steady Wenger brings means the money will continue to flow in - it's not as if the fans who want Wenger out are actually going to stop supporting the club.

"Our ambition is to win the Premier League. Arsene is the best person to help us make that happen," says the statement but what do they base this on?

Arsenal play wonderful football but finish fourth. The FA Cup isn't enough for the majority of fans any more, to be the best team the club needs to genuinely compete for the title and be considered in the same bracket as Real Madrid and Barcelona on the European stage. And, with the summer window ever closer to opening, Arsenal MUST compete in the transfer market. Many of the most vocal Wenger Out Brigade were the same who danced on the streets when Mesut Ozil's signature was announced and who come out every Groundhog Day to repeat that they need to buy a "world class striker".

Swift, decisive movement in the transfer window - signs that the club are at least trying to change and add - might help ease their disappointment.

Good news for Arsenal Fan TV

They've just been renewed for another season. Congratulations, everyone!

No Champions League

Will Arsenal take the Europa League seriously this season? The general noise seems to be that with Champions League football, the club can focus on winning the league. To do that would mean chucking the Europa League, giving Wenger's team a clear aim.

Will Ozil and Sanchez want to stay without Champions League football? Is the difficult hope of a league title enough to keep them happy? Hmmm.

And Ivan Gazidis on Wenger signing a new deal

“There is no complacency anywhere at this club. Our goal is to compete for and win trophies here and in Europe.

"Everything we do is designed to make that happen and we will be working hard on and off the pitch this summer to improve and make a strong challenge next season. The club has grown beyond recognition in every aspect in recent years and we have the platform to be successful and meet the ambitions we and our fans share.”
