The Manchester United defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah was on Monday undergoing a medical at Crystal Palace ahead of a season-long loan deal.

The 19-year-old is contracted at Old Trafford – taking him up to 2020 – but will gain further first-team experience at Palace this campaign where he will work under fellow Dutchman, Frank De Boer.

Fosu-Mensah is regarded as an exciting prospect by United and can operate at either full-back or in the centre of defence or even in midfield. The Under-21 international has already made 11 first-team appearances at United having broken into the squad during Louis Van Gaal’s final year in charge.

Fosu-Mensah has been assured he has a future at United where Jose Mourinho regards him as a potential long-term successor to right-back Antonio Valencia. However the manager has also told the player that he needs to gain greater discipline and will hope he can do that with regular first-team football at Palace.

His arrival appears to be a shrewd move from De Boer who has already also made another clever loan signing by bringing in Ruben Loftus-Cheek from Chelsea for a season. Palace, who may well play with three at the back this season, have already signed Jairo Riedewald from Ajax this summer and De Boer has also had an interest in Arsenal defender Calum Chambers.

United also confirmed on Monday that the 20-year-old defender Cameron Borthwick-Jackson will join Leeds United on a season-long loan.
