Stoke City 2 Manchester United 2: Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting spoils Jose Mourinho's perfect start

Jose Mourinho had claimed in midweek that he “doesn’t like the sea to be flat” as the Manchester United manager sought to dampen the premature title talk surrounding his team.

Well, there were plenty of waves on a turbulent, stormy evening here at the bet365 stadium, when Stoke City put a dent in United’s 100 per cent start to the season and, by the end, it was hard to know whether it had been feistier on the field or off it.

Mourinho had taken umbrage with Mark Hughes, his Stoke counterpart, for shoving him and reputedly telling him to “f--- off” when the Portuguese encroached on his rival’s technical area. Mourinho responded by snubbing the offer of a handshake before making a point of shaking the hands of every one of Hughes’s backroom staff.

The Portuguese seemed even less happy about being asked about the spat, walking out of a BBC interview when the matter was raised because he felt he was unfairly  cast as the guilty party. He then aimed a cheap shot at Stoke by suggesting “one team wanted to win, another wanted to draw”, something he claimed was becoming “trendy” in the Premier League.

Hughes smirked when Mourinho’s assessment was put to him and took it as vindication that United’s cage had once again been rattled in these parts. “It has to be viewed as a negative result for him,” the Stoke manager said. “Sometimes managers of top six clubs don’t take negative results too kindly. Maybe he reacted in the wrong way. I pushed him because he was in my technical area. Maybe that is why he didn’t shake my hand. In fairness, I have my history with handshakes. Maybe it’s me.”

For all the needle between the managers, though, this was a classic English scrap played hard but fair with no one willing to give an inch. It was just the right side of aggressive and the crowd lapped it up. United fell behind, then led thanks to goals from that budding pairing of Marcus Rashford and Romelu Lukaku, before being pegged back.

Maxim Choupo-Moting was their nemesis, the Cameroon forward – a free summer signing from Schalke - scoring twice, even if Jack Butland produced another of those performances that have to make you wonder why Gareth Southgate persists with Joe Hart in goal for England.

David De Gea was no less brilliant in United’s goal, it must be pointed out, even if the same could not be said of some of the defending in front of him. Phil Jones will not want to see either of Stoke’s goals back in a hurry and Matteo Darmian did not cover himself in glory for the first either. Indeed, the best defender on show was Stoke’s imperious Kurt Zouma, on loan from Chelsea. What a cheap but invaluable recruit he looks. “There’s no such thing as a free transfer my CEO tells me, you still have to pay their wages,” Hughes joked.

United’s record here in the league since Sir Alex Ferguson retired now reads LDLDD. Mourinho had predicted a battle and reacted by stiffening his midfield. Playmaker Juan Mata made way for Ander Herrera and Henrikh Mkhitaryan was pushed out of the No. 10 role to a position wide on the right.

Whether the change or Stoke were more responsible for disrupting the attacking fluidity United had showcased in their opening three matches is open to debate. Hughes had claimed United had “areas that are a little loose positionally” which his side would try to exploit, another thing Mourinho had taken unkindly to. But presumably by that, Hughes meant the left back area. If there is a weakness in this United team it is there – or at least it is accentuated when Darmian is deployed in the position. Had Darren Fletcher swept a ball out to Mame Biram Diouf on United’s right, there is every chance Antonio Valencia would have closed him down, or at least done enough to put off the Stoke player. Darmian, by contrast, was too slow, trundling along rather than putting everything in to get to Diouf. Jones was also at fault, as Rio Ferdinand pointed out, for failing to cover the front post but take nothing away from the cross, it was a beauty, and Choupo-Moting made no mistake with the finish.

United’s reaction, though, was swift. Mkhitaryan whipped in a corner that was headed on by Nemanja Matic at the front post. Paul Pogba, unmarked, had a simple header but seemed to get his bearings slightly wrong only to watch the ball bounce in off the back of Rashford’s head. Goals were shipped on both sides but that had little to do with either goalkeeper. Butland twice denied Rashford in the first half and then made an excellent save from his own player, Zouma, late on.

De Gea was similarly impressive. His instinctive reflex save to tip over Jese’s terrific volley from Erik Pieters’ left-wing cross was a show-stopper. It was just a shame he was rendered powerless from what followed at the resulting corner. Xherdan Shaqiri whipped in the cross, Jones got under the ball, slipped on his backside and Choupo-Moting could not believe his luck as he was left unchallenged to head home for his second. Mourinho will have been furious. United had worked hard to force themselves in front. Darmian had made some amends for his earlier fumbling when he nicked the ball off Joe Allen, darted forward and slipped the ball into Mkhitaryan’s path. Lukaku timed his run well, Pieters playing him on, and although Butland saved his first shot, the Belgian gobbled up the rebound.

Lukaku missed a golden chance to win it when he blazed Anthony Martial’s cross high over the bar from close range, by which point Mourinho and Hughes had already had their ding dong after the Stoke manager reacted unkindly to a foul. “I prefer not to answer the question because your question is a bad question,” Mourinho said afterwards. “Because it looks like is my fault, is my problem. And your question is not correct, I am sorry. I don’t speak about stupid things, I’m too old for that, talking about stupid things is for stupid people.”

United don't have much to worry about

You would expect to see United fighting for the title this season and despite failing to keep their 100% record going, they weren't bad.

Lukaku and Matic look the perfect fit for the team, particular the freedom the latter gives Pogba - a player who often looked overworked and underappreciated last season.

Stoke's scorer on the game

Choupo-Moting: "It was very tough, maybe against the best team in the Premier League and a 2-2 draw is a good result. Yes I’m happy with my goal but the result is the most important thing.

"My goal is always to score or give an assist, but I’m very happy we didn’t lose this game."

The Premier League table

Some good signs for Stoke

It's fair to say that Stoke could've got the win today and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting could've got himself a hat-trick.

And it was good to see Zouma looking sharp and reminding people what a talented defender he is, particularly after so long out through injury.

This might make Jose smile...

FULL-TIME! Stoke City 2 - 2 Manchester United

United's 100% record has ended but it was a great game from the neutral as both teams came from behind to draw level.

Hughes may be the happier of the two managers but one would suspect that neither is happy with the referee. But are they ever...?

90 + 3 mins

It's all United as they look for the winner to keep theor 100% record going.

Valencia wins a corner with three minutes of extra time to be played. The ball comes of Zouma but Butland is alert enough to get down at his right-hand post and push it wide.

Mourinho gives someone a sarcastic round of applause as the game goes over the allotted three minutes.

Pogba has a half chance but doesn't connect with it properly.

Time on ball (at full time)

Average touch positions (full time)

89 mins

Matic sends a hopeful ball long which Lingard sends into the box, but Mata can't get there before Butland.

Mata wins a free-kick after a silly foul from Allen about 25 yards out.

86 mins

Some clutch bags going on in the technical area between Hughes and Mourinho. I wonder who would win in a fight?

United are clearly looking for the win as Pogba's ball is too quick for Lukaku to get to and the striker rubs his head.

Martial fouls Zouma on the right and Hughes feels the United man should've got a yellow, but the referee has been quite lenient today.

It's been a mismatch at bet365 Stadium so far

Man Utd are dominating this game, firing in a total of 15 shots compared to ten from Stoke so far.

83 mins

Lukaku sends a chance into row zed. It was a great ball from Martial on the right and in the striker's defence, he didn't appear to get a good connection.

The final United sub is coming on as Mkhitaryan is replaced by Lingard.

Wow!

80 mins

Stoke on the offensive as Berahino gives Bailly some trouble in the box, the United defender eventually fouls Shaqiri and sends the ball out for a corner.

The Potters are unable to score from this one as the winger sends it into the side netting.

United aren't getting any time on the ball at the moment with their opponents keeping a strong defensive shape.

76 mins

Berahino is getting ready to come on for the hosts and he replaces Jese.

United have had most of the possession since their double change but haven't troubled the home defense with Zouma, in particular, looking very good.

Pogba takes a long range shot and it's straight into Butland's arms.

Time on ball (60 - 75 min)

73 mins

Mata and Martial replace Herrera and Rashford. Both players can be pleased with their performances and it's not a surprise as Jose Mourinho has done similar a few times this season.

70 mins

Mata looks like he will be the first United substitute with 20 minutes left for either side to get a winner.

Rashford takes a cross/shot from the right but Butland catches and sends it straight into the oppositions half.

67 mins

Lukaku's shot is pushed wide by Butland as the striker looks to get United back in the lead.

Valencia is the next visiting player to try their luck but his shot from 30 yards is just wide of the post.

GOAL! CHOUPO-MOTING

The Stoke player gets his brace after Jones fails to clear from the corner and the player heads home from six yards out.

De Gea will be disappointed to be beaten at his near post.

62 mins

A superb stop from De Gea as Jese shoots from the edge of the six yard box after the forward connects with Pieters cross from the left.

He tips it over when it looked like it was heading for the roof of the net.

GOAL!

2-2: Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting scores the leveller for Stoke.

Time on ball (45 - 60 min)

GOAL! LUKAKU!

That is the Belgian's fourth goal of the season as he plays the offside trap perfectly.

Stoke are caught napping and Mkhitaryan plays a super ball which Lukaku runs onto. Butland can only block the initial effort and the striker scores from the rebound.

GOAL!

A goal from Romelu Lukaku for Man Utd makes the score 1-2.

55 mins

Choupo-Moting unlucky to be ruled offside after he collects a cross field pass by Shaqiri. It looked like Darmian was playing him on.

The hosts are definitely the livelier of the two so far this half and Mark Hughes should be pleased with his team since the break.

51 mins

Lukaku comes in late on Allen and Stoke get a free-kick, the striker could've got a yellow for his sloppy attempt.

Herrera breaks up the hosts attack and Bailly heads it clear.

Stoke can't get composed on the ball and Pogba sends a diagonal ball to Mkhitaryan, but the forward is offside when Rashford was in a far better position.

48 mins

United are on the attack straight away and Stoke are already camped in their own half. The visitors have a corner and Pogba was expecting Matic to send it towards him in the box but the midfielder sent it short and United get another corner.

He gets his chance after Herrera plays him in but it's nothing spectacular and Butland takes it easily.

Nice little stat

Eric Choupo-Moting is the 1st player to score a Premier League goal vs United since Harry Kane on May 14. They had gone 534 mins without conceding in the league.

SECOND-HALF

Stoke make a change with Martins Indi replacing Cameron, the suggestion is that the latter has a knock.

United get the game underway.

HALF-TIME. Stoke City 1 - 1 Manchester United

I doubt either manager will be happy with the way their team conceded their goal, but it's all level at the break.

Time on ball (first half)

Average touch positions (45 + 3 min)

GOAL. RASHFORD

United reply immediately as Matic flicks down Mkhitaryan's corner and Pogba heads it home, but it rebounds of Rashford and he will surely claim it.

GOAL!

Marcus Rashford makes it 1-1 with an equaliser for Man Utd right on the cusp of half time.

GOAL. CHOUPO-MOTING

Stoke take the lead and the scorer celebrates his first Premier League goal with a little dance.

The cross field ball from Fletcher finds Diouf who sends it into the box and the new boy knocks it past De Gea.

Turns out the long ball does work.

GOAL!

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting strikes late in the first half to open the scoring. 1-0 to Stoke.

42 mins

Jese not really doing the job he's supposed to, as he fails again to hold the ball up - allowing United to get on the front foot again.

Choupo-Moting plays in Shaqiri but again the home side lose possession and United are attacking. Luckily for the Potters, Zouma is there to clear up any loose balls.

Mkhitaryan takes the corner but it's too long.

The shot count is similar

Stoke and Man Utd are evenly matched in attack so far - the home side have fired in five shots to the visitors' five.

39 mins

Rashford wins a throw-in after a little push on Cameron and United win a foul moments after when Fletcher puts a poor tackle in on Pogba.

Matic's delivery isn't great and they get another throw-in when it doesn't beat the first man. Stoke can't seem to get out of their own half until Herrera fouls Shaqiri, but another long ball into the box comes to nothing.

Man Utd defence unworried so far

Stoke have not been posing a threat in the final third.

36 mins

Valencia sends a ball across goal and Zouma is playing three United players onside but no one attacks the cross. The visitors play is starting to feel a little wasteful as they have had around 68% possession in the opening 35 minutes.

33 mins

Zouma saves the home side as he knocks out Valencia's cross before it got to Rashford who looked to be in a good position.

Crouch and Berahino are warming up but I'm not sure we'll see changes just yet.

Rashford is back over on the left now as United look to use his pace to trouble the Potters.

Diouf is down - or just doing his laces up.  It's definitely the latter.

30 mins

Bailly is down after an awkward fall but it doesn't look serious as he's up after stretching.

Although United have had the majority of possession, Stoke will be happy that they aren't giving them too much time on the ball.

Time on ball (15 - 30 min)

27 mins

Shaqiri sends a ball forward for Jese but the striker doesn't have the pace to get there ahead of Bailly. Or De Gea.

Stoke manage to keep possession and Shaqiri takes a shot that is saved easily De Gea. He would have done well to look up as Pieters was unmarked about six yards from the near post.

Another Rashford run forces another save from the Stoke keeper.

24 mins

Fletcher wins the ball in the middle of the park and the former United player sends it into the box and Jese's poor touch spoils a good move for the home side.

Rashford finds space down the right again but his shot is saved by Butland's legs.

21 mins

Another Lukaku chance after Matic crosses into the box but the Belgian is offside and it's a good decision by the officials.

Stoke are trying to catch United out with the long ball tactic as Fletcher is the latest trying to catch out Jones and co as he aims a ball at Shaqiri.

18 mins

Rashford and Lukaku look like the visitors most dangerous players at the moment but Stoke are doing well to shackle them, much like Leicester did two weeks ago.

Choupo-Moting sees De Gea of his line and tries a half volley but it's nowhere near the goal in the end. Although you have to praise his confidence.

United get their first corner as Pogba runs onto Herrera's cross and squares into the box for Lukaku, but Stoke are defending well.

Man Utd hit back

Man Utd register their first shot, in response to two so far from Stoke.

Man Utd enjoying plenty of touches of the ball so far

Man Utd have had 166 touches of the ball compared to 76 by Stoke.

Time on ball (0 - 15 min)

Stoke and Man Utd yet to find a way through

Tense opening quarter of an hour at bet365 Stadium, as Stoke and Man Utd struggle to get shots on goal

15 mins

Herrera takes a free-kick and plays in Mkhitaryan but United find themselves heading away from goal.

Stoke are on the attack after Zouma is awarded a free-kick after Pogba's challenge, but they can't create anything as Jese attempts to put pressure on Darmian.

12 mins

Since the arrival of Matic, Pogba is looking more and more like the player he was touted to be. He's already found himself on the edge of the box a few times and Stoke would do well to keep an eye on the Frenchman.

Meanwhile, Mark Hughes can be heard shouting on the sideline. A sign of concern, maybe?

9 mins

Both teams look confident and it will be interesting to see who draws blood first. Diouf loses the ball and Rashford picks it up but can't do anything with it.

6 mins

Butland sends a long ball forward all the way to Jese and you suspect that Mark Hughes' men will be the more direct of the two teams. the forward drags the shot across the goal and it goes wide.

Stoke's corner goes straight into the hands of De Gea, who has been one of the visitors top players over the last few seasons.

3 mins

Stoke make the first attacking news with Maxim racing onto a ball but Bailly recovers well to knock the ball out for a corner. Zouma and Lukaku are among the players have a 'wrestling' match in the box.

United are straight up the other end with Rashford down the right, the English youngster knocks it across to Lukaku but Zouma is there to get the ball away from the striker.

KICK-OFF!

The home side get the game underway.

The teams are heading out

United will be going all out to win as they look to regain top spot in the league ahead of their neighbours, while Stoke could go as high as fifth with a +4 goal difference in today's game.

10 minutes to go

We're nearly at kick-off as United look to keep their 100% league record going.

Stoke will line up with a 3-4-2-1 with England keeper Butland in goal. While United stick with their regular 4-3-3 formation.

Fletcher and Valencia are today's captains.

Will this bring Stoke some luck?

A reminder of those teams

Stoke: Butland, Pieters, Wimmer, Zouma, Cameron, Allen, Fletcher, Choupo-Moting, Jese, Shaqiri, Diouf. Subs: Grant, Martins Indi, Tymon, Adam, Sobhi, Berahino, Crouch.

United: de Gea, Valencia, Jones, Bailly, Darmian, Matic, Herrera, Pogba, Mhkitaryan, Rashford, Lukaku. Subs: Romero, Blind, Smalling, Carrick, Mata, Lingard, Martial

History

It is one win each and three draws in the last five league games between the two clubs, with a total of 11 goals goals being scored.

Stoke

The hosts are still without their captain Ryan Shawcross, who is still out with that troublesome back.

Zouma, Diouf and Fletcher have all recovered from knocks picked up during international duty. Mark Hughes will be glad to have a strong defense against a lively United side.

United

Rashford will start on the left wing for United, even though most see him as a striker, while Mkhitaryan will be the other side of top scorer Lukaku.

The former Everton man has got three goals in his three league games for the club to help them keep a 100% record.

The first three games

United started the day at the top of the league table with a 100 record, scoring ten goals and conceding none in their opening three games.

Stoke have won one, drawn one and lost one and are 11th ahead of the results from the 3pm games.

While the visitors have been rampant in front of goal, their hosts have scored just twice - one of which was the easy header converted by Peter Crouch at West Bromwich Albion in their last game.

Stoke skipper Ryan Shawcross will miss Saturday's home game against former club due to a back injury.

Latest signing and fellow centre-half Kevin Wimmer could make his debut in the absence of Shawcross and midfielder Darren Fletcher is hoping to shake off a knee injury in time to face his former club.

What are they saying?

Stoke boss Mark Hughes on facing Man Utd:

"Of all the teams they are clearly at the top of the pile. Their performances and the way they've gone about their business has been impressive.

"The make-up of the United squad is very strong and they're playing in a way that their fans will take to and enjoy. They expect teams to attack with power and pace and ability.

"It's very early days. Hopefully there are still things for us to exploit. These games are huge for us and we always enjoy them. We hope we can get a similar result that we did against Arsenal."

Man Utd boss Jose Mourinho on facing Stoke:

"I would say it's always difficult there. Of course sometimes they lose matches, but normally it's not easy for anyone to play against Stoke.

"Probably because in the last years United was not strong enough and in my personal case last season, we didn't win because we were not good enough, we didn't play well enough, but, yes, they are difficult.

"They are aggressive, they defend with a lot of people, they are dangerous in counter-attack, they are dangerous in set pieces.

"It's a stadium that puts a lot of pressure, too, so I think it's going to be difficult again.

"Hopefully we can be better than in previous years and win, but difficult it is going to before sure."
