Gary Lineker has described the decision to send off Sadio Mane as 'rubbish' in an incident that has left Twitter divided.

Sadio Mane was shown a straight red in the 35th minute of Liverpool's midday fixture against Manchester City.

The Senegalse forward, who is currently the top goalscorer in the Premier League, collided with Man City goalkeeper Ederson as he tried to latch onto a through ball.

Replays showed the 25-year-old's boot had made contact with the goalkeeper's jaw.

Ederson received lengthy treatment from medical staff before stretchered off the pitch in a neck brace.

Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker described Jon Moss' decision to dismiss the forward as 'rubbish'.

Gary Neville, who was commentating on the game for Sky Sports, also believed Moss had made an error.

"It's a 50-50 really and Ederson just gets there first. Sometimes a stadium can tell you if it's a bad challenge and there wasn't great reaction from anybody," Neville said on Sky Sports.

"I don't think that is a red card," said Neville, as replays of the incident were shown.

"His eyes are on the ball, it's ridiculous. He wins that challenge, the goal is there for him.

"It wasn't one of those where you think the goalkeeper is the favourite. He does well to get out, and his foot is high.

"Jon Moss, you have just ruined the game there. He didn't need to give a red card. He could have given a yellow. I think he's got it wrong.

"The reason Ederson is injured is because his back three have ridiculously tried to play the offside."

Gary Neville's brother Philip took to Twitter to disagree with his elder sibling, tweeting: "Good decision Jon Moss."

Fellow Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher also disagreed with his colleague during half-time analysis of the incident.

"Yes, it's a red card. He had his eyes on the ball, but that doesn't mean he isn't endangering his opponnet. He hasn't tried to do him. If anything it's Ederson's quickness off the line thats got him sent off," said Carragher.

"I thought he was in (to score), but if you don't get there, with a boot that high, and clash with his head, it's a red card. It took a few angles, and I needed convincing because I didn't think it at first."

After the match Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp questioned the call to dismiss Mane.

"I don't think it's a red card. He doesn't see him. It was unlucky and an accident. It's really unlucky to play against City with ten-men.

"The foot was not that high. I don't know what you say about it but I don't think it was red card.

"Sadio is upset and hopefully the player [Ederson] is okay."

The Manchester City goalkeeper did not require hospital treatment, but was taken to the club's medical centre for a suspected cheek fracture before returning to the sideline to watch the end of the game.

He later provided an update on his condition, tweeting: "I'm ok, in shock."
