Mark Hughes told Jose Mourinho to "f--- off" after shoving the Manchester United manager during a heated touchline bust up at the bet365 stadium on Saturday.

Mourinho reacted by refusing to shake Hughes's hand at the final whistle and making a point of shaking the hand of every member of the Stoke manager's backroom staff.

The Stoke manager was also said to have encouraged referee Neil Swarbrick to send Mourinho to the stands after apparently taking exception to the Portuguese entering his technical area.

A source said: "Jose wanted to reorganise his defence after a foul and Hughes pushed him as he walked over and told Jose to f--- off. He also asked the referee to send Jose to the stands. In the end Jose just walked away because he doesn't shake hands after being insulted."

Mourinho walked out of a BBC interview after being asked about his refusal to shake Hughes's hand, unhappy that he was being cast as the guilty party.

"I prefer not to answer the question because your question is a bad question,” he said. “Because it looks like is my fault, is my problem. And your question is not correct, I am sorry.' I don’t speak about stupid things, I’m too old for that, talking about stupid things is for stupid people."

Hughes said: "I pushed him because he was in my technical area. Maybe that is why he didn’t shake my hand. In fairness, I have my history with handshakes. Maybe it’s me."
