Swansea City 0 Newcastle United 1: Lascelles goal just the tonic for Toon and recovering Rafa Benitez

This was clearly just what the doctor ordered for Rafa Benitez. The Newcastle manager could not be here at the Liberty Stadium because of an infection following a hernia operation, but Jamaal Lascelles’s match-winner made one wonder if the Spaniard had ever enjoyed himself so much on a sofa.

Mike Ashley, the ever-beleaguered Magpies owner, would also have been in fine spirits following Newcastle’s second Premier League win in succession. He offered Benitez the use of his helicopter to travel to South Wales, but in doing so left himself open to charges of why he had not been so generous in the transfer window.

Yet as Swansea so proudly paraded their celebrated acquisitions, and then watched Renato Sanches and the returning Wilfred Bony do not very much at all to justify their rousing welcomes, Ashley should have breathed a few sighs of relief. For now, at least.

Newcastle just about deserved this, despite Tammy Abraham somehow not converting when rounding Rob Elliot in the second half. But for Lukasz Fabianski’s remarkable save from Joselu’s effort, the visitors would have gone in with the advantage. And Swansea would have nobody to blame but themselves after 45 minutes in which they controlled the ball but did absolutely nothing with it.

A measure of their possessional profligacy was exemplified by the fact that Alfie Mawson’s header in the 36th minute was their first touch in the opposing area.

Swansea improved after the break - although Sanches seemed at a loss playing on the right of Paul Clement’s ineffective diamond – but other than the excellent Jordan Ayew there was a chronic lack of creativity. Newcastle sensed their chance and after Fabianski made a few more alert stops, Lascelles rose to the task from Matt Ritchie’s pin-point corner in the 76th minute, not long after his goal-line clearance from Abraham.

Swansea’s zonal marking system had been exposed and it had led to a second home Leagues loss in as many games this season. Transfer window? What transfer window?

A Newcastle legend is pleased

Post-match reaction from Lascelles

Man-of-the-match Jamaal Lascelles on maintaining form in the Premier League:

"It's going to be really tough. We need to really do well at home, get the fans going, get the fans behind us. It's literally down to us, we need to make sure we do this every week."

Vital Lascelles

Not only did he score the winning goal for his side, but Jamaal Lascelles blocked a crucial effort from Swansea's Tammy Abraham to keep it 0-0.  A captain's performance, you could say. I'm sure anyone else would have done the same, mind.

FULL TIME: Swansea 0 - 1 Newcastle

Jamaal Lascalles' header wins it for Newcastle. They go into the top half of the table and register their first away win of the season.  Newcastle were good for their three points today, looking particularly threatening in the second half.

Renato Sanches tried hard but failed to influence the game much. There will be more from him though, I'm sure.

Time on ball (at full time)

Average touch positions (full time)

90+4 minutes

Swansea win a free kick from the left, 30 yards out. It's a poor delivery from Clucas and Newcastle nearly break straight away. Gamez picks it up and finds Gayle, who then loses possession. Messy stuff there. Elliot picks up the ball after a deflected cross from Mawson.

90+1 minutes

An awful corner in the end from Clucas there. Nowhere near anyone and goes out for a goal kick. Swansea break with Bony, who finds Narsingh inside the area, who fires down low to Elliot's left. The keeper saves and puts it out for a corner, from which nothing comes. Frustrating for Swansea.

90 minutes

FIVE minutes of added time. The home side win a corner from the right flank. There is still time.

89 minutes

Alfie Mawson is down, as Mike Jones blows to stops Newcastle's counter attack. Not sure what happened there but he's up and walking to the sideline. The ball goes back to Fabianski as Mawson returns.

88 minutes

Gayle goes into the book for complaining to Mike Jones about a Swansea free kick just inside the Newcastle half. The Swans' attack breaks down in the penalty area, going out for a corner from the left. Clucas takes and his cross is met by a free Leroy Fer, whose header is wayward. Time running out for Swansea.

84 minutes

Ritchie takes a Newcastle free kick from the left-hand side. Headed away for a corner by Wilfried Bony. Ritchie takes the kick from the left and it is headed away for another corner.  The second corner fails to beat the first man. Newcastle's attack breaks down with the ball finding Fabianski. Mike Jones blows following a ball hitting Merino hard and winding him. He takes his time getting up.

82 minutes

Swansea are struggling to get the ball. Bony picks it up inside the Newcastle half, though, but soon loses possession. Paul Clement looks on concerned.

80 minutes

The cheers of the Toon Army can be heard above everything else. Their lads have looked dangerous in the past 10 or 15. They still do.

78 minutes

Substitution: Newcastle's Dwight Gayle comes on for Joselu. Having saved his side from going 1-0 down on the hour, the Newcastle captain puts his side into the lead.  Rafa Benitez, a few hundred miles away, will be pleased.

GOAL!

Jamaal Lascelles finally gets the breakthrough for Newcastle - it's 0-1.

76 minutes

Goal! Newcastle take a corner from the left. Ritchie with a left-footed outswinger. Lascelles jumps high and meets the cross, heading it powerfully and straight above Fabianski from a few yards out.  1-0 to Newcastle.

Time on ball (60 - 75 min)

75 minutes

Perez breaks down the right before moving in field. He finds Joselu, who strikes it weakly along the ground from 20-odd yards out. That's an easy save for the Swansea keeper. Newcastle finding more confidence in their play now and - crucially - creating chances. 15 minutes left.

It's been a mismatch at Liberty Stadium so far

Newcastle are dominating this game, firing in a total of 15 shots compared to eight from Swansea so far.

72 minutes

Manquillo finds Perez from the right. Perez fires powerfully down low from just outside the six-yard box, but Fabianski saves with his left boot at his near post.  Good chance, decent save.

69 minutes

New boy Renato Sanches is replaced by Wilfried Bony for Swansea. "A" for effort from the Portuguese but difficult to award him much more than a C minus for his performance today. Newcastle's Mohamed Diame comes on for Hayden.

67 minutes

Swansea are getting a bit more of the ball now. Sanches is still trying to dive things through the middle.  A few minutes of patient play from the Swans ends in no chance. Newcastle counter quickly, Ritchie finds Perez on the right edge of the six-yard box and Perez slides it across the face of goal.

64 minutes

Manquillo finds Ritchie on the right wing. Some neat passing between Newcastle players there. Swansea regain possession with Sanches on the counter before he nearly-instantly loses it again. The new man is struggling a bit. Bony will be on shortly.

60 minutes

Leroy Fer picks out Tammy Abraham through the middle, Abraham rounds the keeper and has just Lascelles to beat. Lascelles slides in to block Abraham's sidefooted effort. Close! Swansea win one corner, before winning another one.

Time on ball (45 - 60 min)

57 minutes

Perez fouls Sanches 30 yards out. A free kick to Swansea in an almost-dangerous position.  Sanches takes it and his kick is well off-target.

56 minutes

Ayew looking dangerous on the left. Nearly creates one chance before creating another right away with a quick ball in. Elliot makes a sharp save at his near post from Tom Carroll on the volley to keep the game at 0-0.

53 minutes

Fer is dispossessed in his own half and Newcastle briefly break. Clucas regains possession before the ball goes all the way back to Fabianski. Newcastle get the ball back and Merino finds some space on the left edge of the Swansea box.  Perez picks up the ball 25 yards out, shoots one that is best described as high, wide and not very handsome.

50 minutes

Swansea counter with Clucas, Sanches picks the ball up in the midfield. Olsson swings one in from out left. The crowd cheer for a home corner.

48 minutes

That's a definite yellow for Ritchie. A high boot on Mawson there. He looked a little worried there before Jones booked him. Reds have been given for that sort of challenge in the past. Think of what happened yesterday at the Etihad.

47 minutes

Merino picks the ball up on his own half and passes out wide left to Gámez .  A mistimed challenge from Naughton sees him pick up a booking. Nothing comes from Newcastle's free kick and attack.

SECOND HALF

We're back underway at the Liberty Stadium. Plenty from both sides in the first half. Will be interesting to see if Sanches can make his mark on the game after a mixed first 45.

HALF TIME: Swansea 0 - 0 Newcastle

Joselu flicks the ball out to Hayden to continue a neat Newcastle move. Hayden strikes it from 20 yards out. Hit well but straight at Fabianski. Swansea counter and win a corner, but Mike Jones blows for the half before they have time to take it. Nil-all after a fast-paced ending to the first half.

Time on ball (first half)

Average touch positions (half time)

43 minutes

Fer is fouled by Merino around 35 yards out. The Spaniard has been involved a lot in the last few minutes. Carroll takes the free kick but it is headed away. Swansea regain possession and swing in a cross from the left. Lascelles looks to head it away from a foot off the ground and belly-flops onto the ball. Did it hit his arm? Unorthodox defending, in any case.

The shot count is similar

Swansea and Newcastle are evenly matched in attack so far - the vistors have fired in seven shots to the hosts' four.

40 minutes

Hayden and Abraham tussle in the centre of the pitch. Hayden slips and Abraham goes down with him. Abraham looks in a little pain after taking a knock to the midriff.

38 minutes

Ayew dispossess Newcastle and curls a shot to Elliot's right from 20 yards out. He saves well and it's a Swansea corner. Carroll takes from the left, Mawson finds it but heads wide. Great chance!

37 minutes

Newcastle have been much the better side for the last ten minutes. Swansea under pressure. Swansea counter with a loopy Naughton cross. Abraham meets it but cannot make anything of it. Newcastle pick up possession in their own half.

34 minutes

Penalty appeal from Newcastle! Mike Jones says no. Mawson slides in on the edge of the box but Merino goes down easily. Jones had a great view of that.

33 minutes

Joselu rises well to meet a deflected in-swinging cross and glances it towards the far post but Fabianski saves masterfully. Great save, very nearly 1-0 to Newcastle.

32 minutes

Tammy Abraham is fouled near the centre circle. Plenty of sideways passing from Swansea but not too much incision so far.  Sanches loses possession as Newcastle counter and win a corner, courtesy of a Fernandez-deflected cross.

Time on ball (15 - 30 min)

29 minutes

Joselu has a go on the volley from 25 yards out. He shoots well wide but Newcastle are getting back into this game as the half-hour approaches.

28 minutes

A clumsy challenge involving Merino and Renato Sanches. Merino looked to be late there but nothing malicious. It sounded worse than it actually was. Bony warming up in his hi-vis bib is greeted with cheers from the home crowd.

26 miniutes

A looping ball comes in towards Murphy on the edge of the box. Swansea fail to deal with it and Murphy gets a shot away bit it's well over.  Newcastle's best moment so far.

25 minutes

Merino is fouled by Jordan Ayew just inside the Swans' half. Newcastle take the free kick quickly. Too quickly perhaps as Swansea regain possession and start another attack from deep inside their own half.

Olsson is fouled by Manquillo and wins a free kick ten yards from the byline on the left. The free kick swings in but Newcastle pick up possesion and win a free kick of their own just inside their own half.

22 minutes

Naughton links up well with Sanches on the right. A ball comes in from the right to Tammy Abraham who is penalised for a foul. Free kick to Newcastle inside their own penalty area.

Swansea enjoying plenty of touches of the ball so far.

Swansea have had 179 touches of the ball compared to 89 by Newcastle.

Time on ball (0 - 15 min)

19 minutes

Swansea dominating possession but few chances for either side inside the first 20 minutes.  Newcastle look quite comfortable in defence and Swansea haven't been able to find that key ball.

15 minutes

Sanches is very keen for the ball. He has been decent if not great on the ball so far. Newcastle allowing Swansea plenty of space. Sanches fires in a deflected cross from the right which is claimed easily by Elliot.

12 minutes

The last few minutes' play have been mostly in the midfield. Patient play from both sides so far, Swansea leading possession. Sanches nearly finds Abraham with a through ball on the edge of the box.

8 minutes

Sanches is seeing a fair bit of the ball in the middle of the pitch. Murphy takes a shot from outside the box which is deflected. Sanches collects the ball on the edge of his own box but is taken out by Hayden, who is booked.

4 minutes

A lively Newcastle attack ends in a shot straight at Fabianski from the edge of the box. Olsson counters for Swansea before Newcastle regain possession.

Newcastle threaten for the first time

Following the earlier Swansea effort, Newcastle register their first attempt at goal.

3 minutes

Mawson was taken out by Ritchie but the ref plays advantage. Sanches picks the ball up in midfield and plays it to Naughton. Ritchie gets a message to calm down from ref Mike Jones.

2 minutes

Swansea get a free kick outside the 18-yard box. Carroll takes it and fires it well over.

Kick off!

Swansea kick off at a rainy Liberty Stadium. All eyes on Swansea's Renato Sanches. In terms of young talent, it's worth keeping an eye on Tammy Abraham, too.

Sanches-watch

The young Portuguese was not only a part of his country's Euro 2016 winning squad, but was also named Young Player of the tournament. He made 25 appearances for Bayern Munich last season before signing on loan for The Swans. He's an exciting talent and it's great to see him in the Premier League. Let's see how he adapts to it.

The form and head-to-head

The home side have taken four points from their first three games, drawing with Southampton away, losing 4-0 at home to Manchester United and beating Crystal Palace away last time round.

The visitors lost their first two games (2-0 to Spurs and 1-0 to Huddersfield) before winning their first points with a 3-0 home win against West Ham.  Last time these two teams faced each other was in April last year, with Newcastle running out 3-0 victors. That was Benitez's first game in charge, incidentally.

Benitez misses the trip to Wales

Sanches starts for The Swans

A tale of two suspensions for Newcastle

Jonjo Shelvey is back on the bench having served his three-match suspension for a stamp on Tottenham's Dele Alli on the opening day of the season. Meanwhile, Aleksandar Mitrovic begins the first of his three-game ban for violent conduct, after an incident with West Ham's Manuel Lanzini.
