Wayne Rooney was left bloodied and angry after being elbowed in the face by Bournemouth defender Simon Francis.

Rooney started up front with Dominic Calvert-Lewin as Everton welcomed Bournemouth to Goodison Park.

The 31-year-old leapt to compete for a header with defender Simon Francis, who caught the striker with a stray arm.

Referee Martin Atkinson failed to give Francis a card for the incident, despite a nasty gash appearing above Rooney's left eye.

Rooney confronted Atkinson before being forced from the field to receive stitches on the wound.

It should be a red card," said former Everton midfielder Kevin Kilbane on BBC's Final Score show.

"He's extremely lucky Francis. He knows exactly what he's doing and it's a straight arm to the face. It should be a penalty and a red card."

Rooney was able to retake the pitch after receiving treatment and saw out the first half.
