Son Heung-min, the Tottenham Hotspur forward,  said the West Ham fans will have understood why he celebrated his goal against them on Thursday night with a shushing gesture.

West Ham last year “unreservedly condemned” a supporter who racially abused the South Korean in a video that was circulated on social media. In the clip, a man who identified himself as a West Ham fan asked Son if he “does DVDs”, a reference which is used as a racial slur against an Asian person.

“It was nothing special,” Son said. “I don’t want to talk about it. I think they knew why I did it and that’s it.”

Son’s late equaliser was his sixth goal in nine games, and his 10th of another impressive season. “I am living my dream but I can’t believe it,” he said. “I am playing Premier League but I am still very hungry. I am looking up. I want to be a top player. I think I can still play better.”

Son may be rested for Tottenham’s meeting with AFC Wimbledon on Sunday, although manager Mauricio Pochettino warned that his side must “show respect” to the League One side.

“They are competing in League One but always it is tough to play,” said Pochettino. “It will be tough on Sunday again because the FA Cup is magic and is a competition where everything can happen.”
