Dirty TackleWorld’s longest football match ends 603-462
Sunday's bore-draw between Liverpool and Everton may have felt like the longest football match of all time, but that record was actually being broken in Manchester over the weekend.
Starting on Saturday and finishing on Monday, a group of 36 amateur players took part in a 72-hour match at Stretford High School, which is the equivalent of 48 consecutive 90-minute matches. By playing for five hours at a time and seeking rest in tents between shifts, the folks raising money for a local hospice smashed the previous record for an 11-a-side match, which stood at 62 hours.
The game ended 603-462, which means one team must live with the embarrassment of having lost a match by 141 goals.
Match organiser Nick Rose spoke to mancunianmatters.co.uk:
The Stockport sales manager organised the marathon match in aid of Francis House Children’s Hospice, with the total raised so far exceeding their £25,000 target.
“I’m just really chuffed, it’s been really difficult throughout and from day one it’s been a challenge – but the boys were amazing,” said the 26-year-old.
“There’ve been lots of highs and lots of lows but we’ve got through them together.
“The low points were really low and I thought it might all fall apart but the mental strength of the guys it what’s got us to the end.”
The match was filmed and detailed by dedicated volunteers on the side-lines with the evidence soon to be sent off to Guinness to be ratified.
