Man City & Man Utd eye up second pre-season clash

Manchester City and Manchester United could contest another overseas derby next summer, as the International Champions Cup considers shelving plans to hold matches in China.

ICC organisers are concerned that Europe's top clubs will be without many of their biggest names following next summer's World Cup, and as a result they are weighing up whether to cancel the Asian section and condense the competition.

A final decision is yet to be taken, but City, who had been expecting to play a series of matches in the Far East, are now drawing up contingency plans.

They could choose to return to the United States, where they played three matches this summer, or remain in Europe.

The first Manchester derby to be played on foreign soil was hosted in Houston, Texas, in July, and sources have told Goal that another showdown in the US is on the cards once again.

The match at the 71,000-seater NRG Stadium proved to be a money-spinner for both clubs are it is understand that both are open to negotiating a repeat.

City and United were due to play each other in Beijing in July 2016, only for the match to be cancelled due to a heavily damaged pitch.

Although both Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho had been less than impressed with their experiences in China a year ago, City had been open to returning next summer, though United had already been expected to tour the United States regardless.

A final agreement would depend on the ICC's plans and is likely to take many months to finalise in any case, given the two clubs had their differences over treatment of the pitch in Beijing last year, while confirmation of Houston as the venue for this year's game was delayed by several weeks as both sides tried to find a stadium and date which best fit around their existing schedules.
