Manchester United and Manchester City will face no action from the Football Association for the post-match altercation that marred this month’s derby between the two clubs.

Mikel Arteta, one of City manager Pep Guardiola’s assistant coaches, was left nursing a cut eyebrow after clashes broke out following City’s 2-1 win at Old Trafford.

Milk and water were allegedly thrown at Jose Mourinho in the fracas after the United manager took exception to City’s dressing room celebrations.

Referee Michael Oliver did not see or include any reference to the incident in his match report, which led the FA to ask United and City to submit their observations.

However, after investigating the events, English football’s governing body have decided against taking the matter further.

An FA statement, released on Thursday, said: “Following a review of the evidence provided by the clubs and independent eyewitnesses the FA will be taking no formal action.”

City's win on 12 December saw Guardiola's side open up an 11-point gap at the top of the Premier League table over their neighbours and nearest challengers.
