Crystal Palace earned their first victory of Roy Hodgson's reign as manager and their first over Premier League opposition since May with a 1-0 home defeat of Huddersfield in the League Cup.
The Eagles' progress into the competition's fourth round also represented the first victory Hodgson has experienced since England defeated Wales at the European Championships in June 2016.
The 70-year-old's first match in charge at his latest club ended in a 1-0 home defeat to Southampton - but a much-changed team significantly improved from the point Bakary Sako headed the Eagles in front.
Elsewhere, Scott Hogan's Aston Villa exited the competition after Patrick Bamford scored twice as Middlesbrough beat a 10-man side.
The fomer Republic of Ireland U-18 forward netted from the penalty spot after being brought down by Tommy Elphick, who was shown a second yellow card.
Bamford, who hit the crossbar with a header in the first half, added his second with 23 minutes remaining.
Wes Hoolahan's Norwich advanced to the fourth round thanks to a Mario Vrancic brace and Josh Murphy's strike in their 3-1 win over Championship rivals Brentford.
