Koeman 'very disappointed' by Rooney behaviour

Koeman read a prepared statement at his press conference yesterday, Everton insisting further questions could not be taken for legal reasons.

Rooney was arrested last Friday and will appear in court on September 18.

"Obviously I am very disappointed with the situation regarding Wayne Rooney," said Koeman.

"We have spoken on Tuesday and the chairman Bill Kenwright also spoke to Wayne about the situation, and in line with any disciplinary matter it will be dealt with internally by the club at the appropriate time."

Koeman said the former England captain will still be available for selection.

"He will play this Saturday. If I see that Wayne is not in a physical or mental condition to play then he won't play," said the manager.

Koeman held talks with another of the club's star players, Ross Barkley, following the midfielder's aborted move to Chelsea.

"Ross also came to see me on Tuesday and he explained to me why he turned down to go to Chelsea," said the manager.

"That is a private talk with Ross and I am not the right man to explain to you about his decision or the reason of that decision.

"He was open to make a move to another club and what I heard from the board was there was an agreement between Chelsea and Everton. But finally the decision was by the player and that is what happened at that time."

Koeman said he could use Barkley during the course of the season, but more surprisingly he has opened the door for striker Oumar Niasse to play in the first team.

Niasse was sent on loan last year with Koeman saying he did not believe he had the necessary quality, but after a deadline-day move to Crystal Palace broke down - and Everton failed to secure a striker - Niasse is now back in the squad.

"Last season was a different season," said Koeman.

"Maybe there were more difficulties for him but his behaviour was perfect in the Under-23s so now is the right time and he needs to fight like every player for his chance."
