Republic of Ireland legend John Giles believes Jurgen Klopp has made a big mistake by choosing to blame his players for their latest defensive lapses.

Shinji Okazaki and Islam Slimani were on target for Leicester as they dumped Liverpool out of the Caracao Cup at the King Power Stadium on Tuesday.

Klopp fumed about the standard of their defending after the game.

“I’m sick of goals like this to be honest, you cannot play football and do that,” Klopp told Sky Sports. “We conceded like this, that makes me really, really sick.

"We should have scored three but as long as you leave games open, you have to defend. We always have to defend these situations better.

"The second ball after the corner, it’s close but it’s not offside. So we need to make it more clear that it’s offside. The only thing you can do is to push up – we didn’t.

"With the second one it is a throw-in again. Everyone can imagine we know how to defend them but obviously we don’t do it, because always somebody else is doing it."

Defensive issues have haunted Klopp during his 18 months in charge at Anfield but Giles believes that this is the first time that he has taken aim at his own players over these type of mistakes.

"When you read those comments from what I can read there is that he's passing the blame onto the players and the last thing a manager should do is that because he's been there for 18 months," Giles told Off The Ball on Newstalk.

"He's responsible for how they defend the way they should defend and I think when the players read that, they'll say, 'What's happening here? He's not taking any of the blame and we're taking all the blame'. This is the first time he's done that. People like myself and you can criticise the defending but the manager shouldn't be getting on to about his own players."

"I think it actually shows up his lack of knowledge, in my opinion, of how to defend because he's talking about the second ball when the ball's half cleared. It should be common sense that you have to wait until the ball is cleared. But he's not."
