Unusual game where we looked stronger defensively than offensively for a change.

VVD had a great debut obviously. Noticeably more vocal than our usual CB's, looks to want to lead as well as just play well himself.

Robertson also had a great game - looks a genuine quality LB, and a bargain to boot. Has only had 1 disappointing game for me since he arrived, and is clearly miles better than Moreno.

Karius had very little to do. A bit slow off his line a couple of times, although I think Martin Keown was exaggerating that supposed weakness in his game. I was more worried about him dropping that easy catch. He thought he was fouled, but he had the ball comfortably in both hands and needs to hang on to it, fouled or not. Stilll not convincing me as our long term no 1, although I would still play him ahead of Mignolet at this point to give him a chance.

      Gomez had a good game.

Everybody else I thought was pretty average. Lallana was our best midfielder, despite being understandably rusty. Gini did well when he came on too.

Ox put in some good dead balls, but was poor in open play I thought. There was space down their left flank, especially first half, but he kept drifting in field and so failed to exploit it. On the couple of occasions he went wide, his touch was off.

Still, we know we are good going forward, and dodgy at the back, so seeing us look straight away stronger at the back with VVD in there was the main thing. That and the result.

Robertson was on fire yesterday. What a game! He was everywhere and was excellent. So calm and confident...

Gomez was disappointing. He shoots himself n the fool, so much talent but lacks concentration.

VVD was great and brought what he was bought for, serenity, leaderships and skills/talent. We now have a CB who is dominant and who knows how to boss a defense.

After watching the game, I think that Firmino should play as no. 10 now to replace Coutinho. He has everything to influence the game from here and shine. I can't find any better player to do the Coutinho role - create and score.

Key points from a great win, for me, were: -

VVD - I felt MUCH more confident about our defence just seeing him on the pitch.  He looks a colossus, is great in the air, composed, confident and good on the ball.  A threat at set pieces and that goal puts him in mersey folklore.  A certainty for captain next season, if not later this season.

Robertson - MOTM and continues to impress.  Our no. 1 left back for certain and a permanent fixture alongside VVD in defence.

Holgate incident - I was waiting to see if it would be a red or yellow card; how the f### was that NO card??!!!!  That was the epitome of dangerous play.  Firmino could have incurred any number of injuries!

The pen was not a pen for me, but was more of a pen than the Everton one in the league, so that, along with a late winner from the "over-priced" VVD was the perfect way to ram it up that lot and wipe the sneer off Allardyce's fat face.  Especially him saying it wasn't a pen.  Though he showed some rare class by not commenting on the Holgate/Firmino incident.

The BBC coverage - I tend not to get involved in all the conspiracy against LFC theories, but the BBC coverage was a disgrace.  The Holgate incident was more about "Firmino MUST have said something" as far as Shearer was concerned.  Plus his view of the 2 penalties in the 2 matches were chalk and f###ing cheese, the tosser!

That means a team that supposedly can't win ugly, has won 3 tricky matches 2-1 on the trot, whilst continuing the rotation policy and we are undefeated since Oct 22nd.  The acid test next Sunday though against City; I think we'll be the first to beat them in the league. 2-1.

Hahahahahahaha knocked the bitters out with fat Sam "Park the bus and hoof the ball" Allardyce at the helm.

I guess we needed 2 to win again. At this rate, it's just a matter of time before we're told that we can't keep doing it, and they're probably right, but I notice they're not saying so about City atm.

The penalty was a penalty all day long, and anyone who argues otherwise doesn't know the rules of the sport. Even if the pushing was minimal, the shirt pull is an automatic foul and a clearcut penalty. Although I didn't see what the offence was until we saw the replay, so fair play to the ref. If we had VAR, as we should have, then the original decision would have stood, and there would have been no arguments over it.

It looked like another replay until they broke the first rule of defending corners. Put man on posts. In fairness lots of sides don't do it, and lots of them then find the ball in the back of their net as a result. With the post completely unguarded, all VVD had to do was win the header to nod it in. Unbelievable that such a simple aspect of the game is neglected to the extent that it is. Every week it happens, from the game down the local park to the very highest levels of the sport.

So we won against them at home in the cup for the first time. Now onto West Brom, and another score to settle.
