Frustrated Matip rues 'brilliant' De Gea save

The Reds centre-back went closest to breaking the deadlock in Saturday's 0-0 stalemate, when his low shot from Roberto Firmino's cross late in the first half was saved by De Gea's foot.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com after the game, Matip said: “I have to score, but he saved it really brilliantly. Opportunities like this we have to use and it was a little bit unlucky and frustrating.”

Despite feeling a sense of disappointment at not getting all three points from a match the hosts controlled throughout, Matip was satisfied with the way in which they limited United to just one clear sight of goal.

He continued: “Against a team like Manchester United you cannot defend every situation but we did it well over the 90 minutes, they didn't often have opportunities, so a clean sheet and we can use this as a base to go on.”

Liverpool return to action on Tuesday when they visit NK Maribor in the Champions League - and Matip is confident of returning from Slovenia with all three points.

“Every few days you have a game and we will prepare and we are looking forward to the game. We are still positive,” the 26-year-old said.

Meanwhile, Joe Gomez, who performed impressively at right-back, shared a similar view to Matip.

The England U21 captain reflected: “[We feel] slight frustration because I think as a team we dominated the game and we had some good chances to put it to bed.

“But I think we have to take the positives from the game. At the end of the day, we've got a clean sheet and we've got to move on with that.”

Gomez also highlighted the respect United showed to the Reds in their approach to the match, which prioritised defence over attack.

“I think they've done that before,” he added.

“We were wary that they could come out either way, but I think they were wary of our threats with a great attacking force and they had five at the back at times, so that shows the threats we have.”
