Arsene Wenger has confirmed Aaron Ramsey suffered a hamstring injury in the closing minutes of Arsenal’s 1-1 draw at Southampton.

The Welsh midfielder completed 90 minutes as the Gunners battled back to claim a point through Olivier Giroud’s late header but ended the limping after seemingly straining his hamstring.

Ramsey has missed only 17 minutes of action in Arsenal’s eight games and Wenger confirmed that the 26-year-old, who has a track record of muscular injuries after a run of games, had suffered another injury blow.

“Aaron Ramsey couldn't play at the end,” Wenger told the BBC. “He had a hamstring problem.”

A hamstring injury will come as a cruel blow to Ramsey, who told Standard Sport earlier this week that he had made changes to ensure he was able to avoid further ailments.

“I have adapted my body to the load of playing in the Premier League and am building up that fitness gradually,” he said.

“I’ve felt really good so far and hopefully that’ll continue for a long time now.”

Should Ramsey miss Wednesday’s trip to West Ham it could open the door for Wenger to hand Jack Wilshere a first Premier League start for Arsenal since May 2016.
