Martin Keown says he does not understand why Arsenal’s record signing Alexandre Lacazette is not starting in the club’s biggest Premier League games, and that he does not deserve such treatment.

Having been dropped ahead of a 4-0 defeat to Liverpool, the Frenchman – who arrived at Emirates Stadium for a club-record £52.7m from Lyon over the summer – also found himself on the bench ahead of the Gunners’ clash at Manchester City on Sunday.

With his side 2-0 down to City, Arsene Wenger called on Lacazette who scored the visitors’ only goal within ten minutes of his introduction.

Lacazette has now scored six goals in 11 Premier League games for Arsenal, and Keown doesn’t feel he deserves to be dropped for these crucial games .

“I do not understand why Lacazette did not start,” Keown wrote in his Daily Mail column.

“This was the second big game after the defeat at Liverpool that he has started on the bench. I don’t think he deserves that.

“Any doubts about Arsenal’s record signing were erased when he came on and scored.”
