Arsene Wenger has backed Jack Wilshere to earn a place in Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad, without leaving Arsenal.

Reports this week had claimed that the Gunners midfielder, who spent last season on loan with Bournemouth, was considering a move away from the club in order to secure the consistent first team football Southgate requires to pick him for Russia next summer.

The 25-year-old recently recovered from an injury sustained late-on last season and now says his fitness is better than ever.

And Wenger it seems agrees with the midfielder, backing him to be on the plane in June.

"He [Wilshere] doesn't necessarily have to leave Arsenal to go to the World Cup,” Wenger said.

"I believe that Jack at the moment is in the best form that I have seen him for a long time.

"He is very close now to being considered like anybody else.

"I think if he keeps going like he's going at the moment, he will go to the World Cup, I'm sure.

"I don't see Jack being fully fit and not going to the World Cup.

"He played games for us already and is part of the scene and will play many more."
