Jamie Carragher believes the Chelsea players must get their "heads back on" and stop the "tidal wave of negativity" if they want to avoid a repeat of the 2015-16 campaign in which Jose Mourinho was sacked.

Chelsea lost their opening game of the new Premier League campaign on Saturday after Burnley beat the champions - who had been reduced to nine men - 3-2 at Stamford Bridge.

The result added to a difficult summer in which Antonio Conte has expressed his frustration at the club's transfer activity - with the Italian currently having just 21 senior players to call upon due to injuries to the likes of Eden Hazard, Pedro and Tiemoue Bakayoko and the sales of several players, including Nemanja Matic to title rivals Manchester United.

The situation has similarities to two seasons ago when Mourinho who, like Conte now, had just led Chelsea to the title only to fail to sign the players he wanted and then watch on as the Blues drew their opening match of the campaign 2-2 after Thibaut Courtois had been sent off.

Five months later the Portuguese coach was sacked, but Carragher believes Chelsea will not follow a similar path this time around if the players maintain their cool and take at least a point from their clash with Spurs on Sunday.

Asked on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football show whether it was time for the champions to panic, Carragher responded: "No. Chelsea need to do the exact opposite.

"If you go back two years when they were champions on the first game of the season, they played at home to Swansea.

"They drew the game, not a great result, and obviously had the situation with the club doctor (Eva Carneiro) and all of a sudden after one game it felt like Chelsea were under pressure.

"It felt like people were fanning the flames, this story just seemed to get bigger and bigger with players and Jose Mourinho until eventually he lost his job.

"They've lost one game at home (this season). What they should be thinking now is: 'Relax, we've got two games until the transfer window is finished.'

"In that time Conte needs a couple of players, I would say. It needs strengthening, especially in wing-back positions. But next week at Tottenham the mentality for Chelsea must be to go there, and don't get beat.

"Get your point, (beat) Everton at home the following week, try and get your three points.

"Go into the international break with four points, maybe three points off the top, not the end of the world, and stop this tidal wave of negativity.

Conte sees 'two faces' of Chelsea as champions are beaten by Burnley

"As we've seen with Costa (today), we've seen Conte - the way he's speaking to the press, you know something's not right with him and the board - I think that's got to stop to be honest.

"Just remember, it's one game, get your head back on.

"As Conte said, (they) don't want another Jose season - well that's the way to try and fix it."
