David Moyes was left wondering what could have been after West Ham conceded an 83rd minute winner at Manchester City.

The Hammers, resilient in defence in the first half, too a surprise lead on the stroke of half-time through Angelo Ogbonna’s first Premier League goal for the club.

City equalised shortly after the restart through Nicolas Otamendi’s bundled goal, but the league leaders looked set to be held for the first time in 20 games across all competitions.

But David Silva capitalised on a rare moment of uncertainty at the back for the Hammers to convert Kevin De Bruyne’s delivery with less than ten minutes to go, as City regained their eight-point lead at the top of the table.

Diafra Sakho then had an opportunity to level the match, but his effort flashed wide of Ederson’s goal, to leave West Ham rooted in the bottom three.

"I have to say it was a really good effort,” said Moyes after the match, speaking to the BBC. “We defended much better today. We've worked a bit on it, we had one day where we could prepare.

"We needed our goalkeeper (Adrian) to play well. He got both hands to most things, I thought most of it was outside the box. I have to say we did a really good job.

"What a chance we have to make it 2-2 late on. My feeling was I thought we deserved it (to equalise). You get results in different ways and it looked as though we might have got one today. Our effort today was top. For long parts of the game we were in with a chance of getting a result."

"We are gutted we lost but we played against a really good side and I thought for long periods we frustrated them - arguably we had the best chances in the first half,” he told Sky Sports.

"So I'm ultimately disappointed not to take something from the game, but I'm really pleased with the players. We were always quite good in the counter, with power and pace up front, you are thinking maybe this is our day but unfortunately the chance at the end just went past the post.

"I think we should have done much better with the winning goal. If you are a centre half in that position you would head it away, so I'm disappointed we lost the ball, but we were playing a young 18-year-old centre half who did really well today."
