Jack Wilshere saw his second appearance back in an Arsenal shirt end with a red card after the midfielder was given his marching orders following a shoving match with a Manchester City U23 player.

Wilshere started Arsenal's U23 clash with City U23s at the Emirates Stadium on Monday night but, after taking exception to Matthew Smith's late challenge on him in the 62nd minute, the 25-year-old sent the City midfielder tumbling to the pitch with a push.

That caused Tyreke Wilson to confront Wilshere, who then reacted by getting involved in a shoving match with him as both players were subsequently sent off.

The dismissal will be a huge blow for Wilshere, who only returned to action for Arsenal last week after spending last season on loan at Bournemouth where his season was cut short due to a broken leg sustained against Tottenham.

The England international's future at Arsenal remains uncertain, with the player having just a year left on his current contract at the club and seeking regular first-team football.
