Kyle Walker believes there is so much completion to get in the England squad that no-one can start taking their place at the World Cup next summer for granted.

England followed up their impressive 0-0 draw against Germany by shutting out Neymar's Brazil in another goal-less encounter at Wembley.

Coach Gareth Southgate was deprived of a number of senior players through injury for both games and ended up giving six youngsters their debuts.

Southgate has already issued a warning that individuals will have to think twice about dropping out of future internationals because they might not get a recall.

And Walker admits the fight to be part of the 23 man squad that leaves in June for the showpiece tournament in Russia has only just begun.

He told Standard Sport: "Gareth hasn't said anything to us about who is in line to be in his squad next summer.

"The competition is strong. Everyone knows that we are playing for the shirt. Every time we are going out on to the field, you have to perform to be on that plane in Russia.

"You just have to look at the lads that have stepped up over the last two games. People like Tammy Abraham, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Joe Gomez are good players and have proved that on the big stage.

"We have a very good depth of squad and we need to utilise that. It is very important that everyone stays fit, keeps playing well for their club because that is what will get them on the plane to Russia.

"It is a proud moment for everyone when they get picked for England, we need to give that back to the manager and repay the faith he has shown by selecting us in the squad.

"Having competition for the World Cup is healthy. It is only going to push every one of us because we know that there is someone biting at our heels or you know you need to take that shirt off someone."

Brazil outplayed England for long periods and could have won had Fernandinho's shot not hit the outside of the post.

It means the Three Lions have still registered only one win against them in the last 25 years.

The manner of England's performances during qualifying for the World Cup came under heavy criticism too.

However, none of the other Home Nations, Ireland, Italy or Holland will play in the finals. When asked if they'd love to be in England's position, Walker replied: "Exactly. That is a pat on the back for ourselves.

"We just want everyone to get behind us. We are going to the World Cup as a nation, not just the 11 on the pitch. If everyone can get behind us and push us, it is only going to help us.

"We are in the World Cup. That's really exciting. It's where we want to be and where we need to be.

"To top off the year with qualification and good performances, we are very happy as a team. Hopefully we can just build on that.

"Against Germany we handled the ball a bit better. Against Brazil we could have played a little more, we all know that. Sometimes you have to respect the opposition, they are all top quality players.

"We have had a couple of good results against two of the big nations so it is a step in the right direction."

The Manchester City right back, who joined from Tottenham for a fee in excess of £50m last summer, claims the team spirit is the best he's known in the England camp.

"The atmosphere is fantastic," he said. "There is not a dull moment, there is a lot of banter. We are fully enjoying our football and working under the manager.

"I have been in the squad since 2011 and known a number of teams, but this is more my age group.

"We have bonded a lot more and kind of get each other a little bit more. That is no disrespect to previous squads, they were all very welcoming and they helped me to get to where I am today."
