Sergio Aguero has confirmed details of the car accident which has ruled him out of Manchester City's clash with Chelsea, revealing how his seatbelt stopped him from suffering more serious injuries.

City confirmed on Friday morning that Aguero was involved in the accident before coach Pep Guardiola said the 29-year-old's broken rib meant he would not be able to travel for the club's game with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening.

Aguero has since returned from Holland to Manchester to undergo further tests on his injury and, in a series of tweets on Friday evening, the striker admitted he could have sustained more serious issues had he not been wearing a seatbelt.

He wrote on the social media site: "Thank you with all my heart for the supportive messages, they really do help me in recovering.

"The taxi I was riding made a wrong turn and crashed against a pole. It was a very heavy slam but seatbelts prevented it from being worse.

"I'd like to thank the staff of the VU University Medical Amsterdam for their care and support. Hats off to all their team."

Aguero's injury is a huge blow for Guardiola, who was only dealt the news on Thursday that left-back Benjamin Mendy will be sidelined for seven months after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.
