Nemanja Matic has said he is willing to play in goal for Manchester United should Jose Mourinho ever call on him to don the gloves.

The Serbia international was forced into central defence against Burnley on Boxing Day when Jose Mourinho brought on Jesse Lingard for Marcos Rojo in a dramatic tactical shift.

Lingard scored twice as United fought back from 2-0 down to rescue a point and Matic looked at ease in an unorthodox role.

"Obviously, I like to play in midfield but if I need to help the team and the coach wants me to play in any position, I will do it," he told Manchester United's official website.

"Even goalkeeper, if we need it. I hope that never needs to happen [laughs], but, if it does, I am there to help. For me, it’s important to play, it doesn’t matter what position."

United host Southampton on Saturday aiming to end the year in second spot after dropping points against Burnley on Tuesday.

Romelu Lukaku looks set to retain his place against Southampton, despite Mourinho insisting he is jaded.
