Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud admitts he was “ashamed” to be a part of his side’s 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Liverpool on Sunday.

And the French striker, who opted to stay at the Emirates this summer despite interest from elsewhere, insisted something has to change if Arsenal are to compete at the top of the Premier League.

Giroud was introduced as a substitute on the hour at Anfield, the game having long since been beyond Arsenal as they were torn apart by Liverpool’s rampant attack.

The defeat has prompted renewed soul searching at the Emirates, and could lead to a flurry of departures of underperforming Arsenal stars. Giroud is now leading the calls for change.

“I was ashamed when I left the pitch against Liverpool. We have to change something,” he told French radio station RMC.

“I have decided to stay. It's my choice, even if everyone does not understand it.

“I still want to win the Premier League here.”
