Olivier Giroud's 'scorpion kick' volley for Arsenal against Crystal Palace has won the Puskas Award for best goal at Fifa's 'The Best' ceremony.

The 31-year-old beat Venezuela's Deyna Castellanos, a stoppage-time effort from the halfway line in the U-17 Women's World Cup, and South African goalkeeper Oscarine Masuluke's last-gasp bicycle kick to the prize.

The ceremony, which takes place at the London Palladium, is the second since the FIFA award once again split from France Football's Ballon d'Or prize.

The winners are decided by a jury of club and international coaches, media representatives and fans.

On accepting his award, Giroud said: "First of all I have to say it's an honour for me.

"I'm delighted to receive this trophy today in front of legends of football. Now l'd just like to thank the people who voted for me. I would like to congratulate the 10 nominees who scored amazing goals too.

"Obviously I would like to thank my team-mates, without them I couldn't score maybe this goal, and my family."

"I think it's my best one," Giroud said following the game. "Alexis [Sanchez] gave me the ball a bit behind and I tried to take it [with the] backheel and I had a lot of luck.

"It was just about luck! I was not on good balance. It was a great feeling and I wanted to score from the first minute. I tried to deflect it. In this position, you can do something else, so I was lucky and it's nice for me and nice for the team."

Despite being named the best goal of 2017, Giroud's strike on New Year's Day was not honoured by the Premier League as a panel including the likes of Thierry Henry and Sir Alex Ferguson opted for Andy Carrol's bicycle kick that month.
