Ross Barkley would be lucky to play for Tottenham, let alone be their highest earner, says Shaka Hislop

Ross Barkley has been told to ‘get off his high horse’ if he wants to move to Tottenham one day.

The Everton midfielder has attracted interest from Tottenham and Chelsea, and even underwent a medical assessment with the latter before a move to Stamford Bridge broke down.

The Toffees had hope to gain as much as £50million for the England international, but a hamstring injury has seen the club lower their demands to closer to £30m.

Barkley is yet to play for Everton this season, but Standard Sport understands that Tottenham will consider making a fresh move for the 23-year-old when the January transfer window opens.

Spurs have been interested in Barkley since December 2016, but former West Ham and Newcastle goalkeeper Shaka Hislop has warned the midfielder that his expectations could block a move to north London.

“Well, I think it’s possible,” said Hislop, who now works as a pundit for ESPN. “He’s got to step down from what was reportedly his wage demands in the summer.

“He was widely touted to make a move in the summer but he wanted to be the highest paid midfield player on Spurs’ books, that’s not going to happen.”

“I’m not absolutely certain [that he would start]. I’ll put this down as a hit in that I think it happens. But he’s got to come down off his high horse a little bit to make this happen.”
