Eddie Nketiah may have begun last night’s EFL Cup tie with Norwich as something of an unknown quantity but he ended it as someone “widely considered the greatest player of all time”.
That is at least according to bastion of accuracy Wikipedia, with the Arsenal striker’s entry on the site swiftly changed to reflect his goalscoring heroics at the Emirates.
Nketiah scored 15 seconds after being introduced as an 85th minute substitute with Arsenal trailing to a first half goal from Norwich forward Josh Murphy.
The 18-year-old then repeated the trick six minutes into extra-time, out-jumping Norwich’s 6ft 4in centre-back Tim Klose to head home a corner.
Arsenal fans in the stadium were soon giving Nketiah a string of standing ovations whilst those with access to a computer were being more creative.
In addition to changing his bio to state “he is widely considered the greatest player of all time” fans added the middle names “Pele Maradona Ronaldinho Kaka” to Edward Keddar Nketiah’s bio.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger was reluctant to get as carried away, batting away comparisons with Arsenal legend Ian Wright even as he praised Nketiah’s movement and combination play.
“Let’s not be too quick, one of the problems nowadays is that people are very quick [to make a judgement],” Wenger said.
“He has qualities, he has top qualities and he is one of the players who was with us in pre-season and that’s why I knew that he could give us something when he comes on.”
