Tottenham are monitoring Barcelona's Andre Gomes, who is available on a season-long loan.

The Portugal international earns about £80,000 per week at the Nou Camp but is unlikely to find regular playing time under Ernesto Valverde. Gomes, a midfielder, shone for Benfica against Spurs in a Europa League tie in Lisbon three years ago and is also a target for West Ham.

Demarai Gray, the Leicester winger, has also been admired by Spurs for a number of years, but early on deadline day, his club were showing little appetite to sell. Both Bournemouth and Crystal Palace were interested in Gray but Leicester were standing firm.

The possible outgoings at Spurs are just as intriguing as the mooted arrivals, however. If Janssen, Sissoko and Nkoudou depart, it would leave Victor Wanyama as the only summer 2016 signing remaining at the club. Sissoko was bought from Newcastle a year ago for a deal that could reach £30m but the France international never managed to gain the trust of manager Mauricio Pochettino and was rarely given opportunities to start.

Although Sissoko said on social media channels recently that he would not be leaving, he is desperate for regular football, as he needs to retain his place in France coach Didier Deschamps’ squad for the 2018 World Cup.
