Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish has joked that they are Liverpool’s “best friends” after signing defender Mamadou Sakho on deadline day.

The Eagles had to wait until the early hours to complete a £26m deal for the Frenchman, who spent the second-half of last season on loan at Selhurst Park.

Palace broke their transfer record last summer, bringing in striker Chrisitian Benteke from Liverpool and Parish has claimed that they’re now “best friends”.

"Both him and Christian came from the same club,” Parish told the Croydon Advertiser.

“We're Liverpool's best friends I think! So we're really, really happy.”

Parish also revealed that Sakho was their top target and that even the players were all asking the club to bring him back.

"It's a four-year deal with an option for a fifth and it's massive for us, absolutely massive as he was such a big part of us last year,"

"He's an amazing character, someone who everyone at the club has grown fond of. He's a unique personality, it's not just what he does on the pitch for us, but what he means to us off it.

"All the players have wanted us to bring him back, the supporters have been driving me mad too, so he was our number one target and the second highest transfer record in our history.”
