West Brom have confirmed at appointment of Alan Pardew as their new manager on a two-and-a-half year contract.

The Baggies dismissed Tony Pulis following a run of 10 games without a win, culminating in a 4-0 defeat to Premier League champions Chelsea.

Since his sacking Gary Megson has been overseeing first-team duties and, after picking up an impressive point at Tottenham on Saturday, there were worrying signs as his side threw away a two goal lead against Newcastle on Tuesday night.

The Baggies confirmed Pardew's appointment in a statement on Wednesday, while Megson - who has now left the club - was thanked for his service.

“Alan brings the experience of more than 300 Premier League games and the kind of dynamic leadership from which our Club can benefit,” said chairman John Williams.

“We were impressed with what he had to say and what he has to offer and we are looking forward to an exciting new era under his charge.”

“Gary leaves with our gratitude for a sterling job completed in difficult circumstances,” he added.

“We met today when I explained our position which he understood and accepted in the highly professional manner with which he has conducted himself since Tony’s departure.

“He steadied the ship in a difficult moment and we are extremely appreciative of his efforts.”

Pardew, who has been out of work since being sacked at Crystal Palace last year, said his extremely excited by the opportunity at the Hawthorns.

“I’m thrilled with the opportunity Albion have provided and looking forward to getting to work with what I consider to be a talented group of players," said Pardew.

“The immediate challenge will be to get the results we need to pull ourselves up the table. But I’m aware that while I’m joining one of the great, traditional clubs of English football, it is one determined to go forward in the Premier League.

“It’s an exciting opportunity to play a part in that ambition.”

The former Newcastle and West Ham boss finds the Baggies sat 16th in the table, though they could slip down a place before he’s even had a game, with Everton (17th) hosting the Hammers (18th) on Wednesday night.

The 58-year-old will take charge of his first game on Saturday when he welcomes his former employers, Crystal Palace, to the Hawthorns.
