Manchester United could be poised to launch an audacious summer raid for Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski.

The brilliant Poland international bagged four goals in Dortmund’s 4-1 Champions League victory over Real Madrid on Wednesday and United boss Sir Alex Ferguson hinted he could be interested in moving for the 24-year-old, who has also been linked with rivals Manchester City.

German champions Bayern Munich, who have already sealed the capture of Lewandowski’s team-mate Mario Gotze, were said to be favourites to land Lewandowski,

But Ferguson was quoted as saying:  ‘If the right player comes along you have to be prepared to make a move.

‘I can find room for anybody here as long as they have the required quality.

‘I am not sure Lewandowski will be sold to Bayern now. The Dortmund fans are not going to be happy and I don’t think they will sell to their main rivals. I think they will either let his contract run out, or sell him somewhere else.’

Ferguson has admitted he would be willing to spend big if it meant luring the right man to Old Trafford.

The arrival of Robin van Persie last summer proved to be the key to United reclaiming their Premier League title and there is talk United could splash out again if it means adding extra quality to kick on again.

Fergie estimates he only needs a couple of players to freshen up his squad for a fresh assault next term but insists he has the funds to make another marquee purchase.

‘I don’t think we need to rebuild at all,’ said Ferguson.

‘Having spoken with the [United owners] Glazer family, there is every intention to kick on.

‘We possibly need two players. It depends. If a player came along who met our criteria we would push the boat out and get him, irrespective of how many players we have.’
