Iran’s Messi: Sardar Azmoun (Picture: Reuters)

Arsenal fans were left frustrated when internet pranksters changed the club’s squad list on Wikipedia to indicate the Gunners had signed striker Sardar Azmoun – nicknamed the ‘Iranian Messi’.

The Iran international, who plays for Rubin Kazan in Russia, mysteriously appeared on the list of players on the popular website and the 20-year-old had apparently been handed the number five shirt by manager Arsene Wenger.

A section of Gunners fans thought that someone in the know had jumped the gun to hail the arrival of new, highly-rated striker arriving at the Emirates.

However, the ‘transfer’ proved to be a mere wind up, with mischief makers adding Azmoun to the page fraudulently to send moderators scrambling for the edit button.

Azmoun was on target in the penalty shootout as Iran bowed out of the Asia Cup to Iraq on Friday.
