Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand contacted Arsene Wenger over a potential transfer to Arsenal.

Ferdinand, who spent twelve supremely successful seasons at Old Trafford after he joined in a record £30million deal from Leeds United in 2001, left Manchester United in 2014 after seeing his contract expire.

‘I am feeling fit and healthy, ready for a new challenge and looking forward to whatever the future holds for me,’ Ferdinand said after leaving the club.

The future looked uncertain for Ferdinand who, after lengthy negotiations, decided to sign a one-year contract with QPR but made just 11 appearances under Harry Redknapp and suffered relegation to the Championship.

Relegation would spell the end of Ferdinand’s career in a bid to turn his hand to punditry, later signing a television contract with BT Sport.

During a Twitter Q&A, Ferdinand appeared to reveal his desire to join Manchester United rivals Arsenal in 2014 after tweeting ‘I did reach out to Mr Wenger!’.

Ferdinand was asked ‘with all those injuries, you should have been at Arsenal. Could have used a player like you,’ by a fan.

Is it possible Ferdinand is a secret admirer of Arsenal? t comes just days after he revealed he was a fan of the Gunners’ new kit.
