Arsene Wenger believes his Arsenal squad are playing better away from home this season because the Gunners are under less pressure and the opposition are usually less defensive.

The Gunners went into second spot in the league with an empthatic 5-1 win against West Ham United at the London Stadium on Saturday evening.

The win means Wenger’s side have won five and drawn two of their seven away matches this term, giving them an unbeaten start to the season away from the Emirates.

Only Manchester City have a better record away from home this term but, by contrast, the Gunners have the fourth best home record.

And Wenger believes this is because his side do not have to deal with the pressures of playing at home and usually face opposition that are forced to attack.

‘I feel that maybe we play with freedom away from home,’ said Wenger.

‘We face a bit less defensive, less compact defensive blocks than at home.

‘At home recently, maybe we lost a bit of patience sometimes when it didn’t come off early in the game. Today, away from home, we played maybe with a little bit less pressure to make the different quickly and are a bit more patient.

‘This team has mental quality and focus. I cannot fault their attitude, they have been very strong on that front.

‘Hopefully now we can maintain the quality of our performances week-in, week-out because December is a very important month in England and it’s important for us to maintain that level.’
