Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is transforming into his worst enemy: Arsene Wenger.

Mourinho, 53, has guided the Red Devils to their worst start in Premier League history so far this season with his United side picking up just 20 points from their first 13 games.

The self-proclaimed Special One claimed in an interview yesterday that his job was as much about reinstating United’s attacking play as it was about winning trophies.

United overlooked Mourinho as a successor for Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013 and the perceived wisdom in appointing the Portuguese last summer was that he’s brought almost instant success to previous clubs.

Mourinho, of course, has had a number of run-ins with Arsenal boss Wenger over the years and Carragher has noted Mourinho’s hypocrisy at overlooking results and speaking about the club’s style of play.

‘[Yes] there’s a contrast and a change from last season. David De Gea was saving ten shots a game last season and now he’s only saving one,’ Carragher acknowledged on Sky Sports.

‘[But] what I would say though is – yes the football is better and Manchester United fans are enjoying going to see the games more under Mourinho than Louis van Gaal – but what makes me smile is that that’s something that Mourinho used to throw at Arsene Wenger.

‘[He used to say]”Ok you play the good football, the press love you but I’ll always win the trophies”‘

‘Yes the football is better and there’s not a lot at times that the manager can do about the finishing – you’ve just got to hope the quality of the players can finish but it’s not enough.

‘You think of the teams they’ve played – West Ham, Burnley, Stoke – two of them are facing relegation this season so you’d expect their keepers to be worked.

‘I think for the cost of the squad – the costliest in world football – to be 13 points off the top of the table is not enough’
