Liverpool and Arsenal target Max Meyer has opened up on his future amid speculation he will leave Schalke this summer.

The 21-year-old was linked with both the Premier League giants in the build-up to the summer transfer window after he rejected a new deal with the Bundesliga side and with one year left on his contract, it’s thought Schalke may look to cash in.

Tottenham Hotspur have also expressed an interest in signing the German in the past and saw a £38million deal fall through last summer.

Meyer has risen through the ranks at his boyhood club and has made four appearances under Joachim Low for the national side, scoring once, while he was part of the Under-21s side who won the European Championships in the summer.

But while his future at Schalke remains unclear and although he wouldn’t rule a move out, Meyer is keeping his options open this summer.

‘Let’s see what happens,’ he told Bild. ‘I declined the [contract] offer because I was not satisfied with my personal situation.

‘I just saw no chance to develop. It would have been the wrong step, however, because the overall situation has changed.

‘I am completely open on my future. Let’s see what happens. It is not the case that I will definitely go.

‘I never said I would change clubs – let alone this summer – I just did not renew the contract.

‘I am really looking forward to the new season and I am happy to be here.’
