Manchester United ace Luke Shaw is set to stay at Old Trafford next season after earning Jose Mourinho’s trust.

The defender experienced a difficult campaign under the Portuguese boss and played just once between December and March, despite being relatively injury-free.

The 22-year-old is entering his fourth season at the Theatre of Dreams but injuries and fitness problems have stunted his progress.

Shaw injured ankle ligaments towards the end of last season but was included in United’s pre-season tour squad to the United States and staff have noted his commitment to a personal training regime.

Mourinho publicly tested Shaw after he pulled out a game against Swansea in November through injury and criticised him a number of times in press conferences.

However, the 54-year-old has been impressed with Shaw’s response this summer and the club believe the defender is rising to the challenge of being a United player.

According to the Independent, Mourinho now considers Shaw a first-team player and is waiting on his return from injury.

The defender is expected to return in September.
