Manchester United are close to missing out on Ivan Perisic after reports in Italy claimed that the Croatian is set to sign a new contract with Inter.

Jose Mourinho’s side have submitted three offers for the 28-year-old, with their highest bid of €50 million (£44m) falling slightly short of the winger’s valuation.

Inter are refusing to budge from their €55m (£48.2m) asking price and have also been in touch with United to assess the possibility of using Anthony Martial as part of the deal.

But Mediaset’s Premium Sport claims that Perisic has now received a new contract offer from Inter which would make him the highest paid player at the club.

The new deal is worth €6m (£5.4m) a year and would run until the summer of 2021, by which time the player would be 32.

Earlier this week, Mourinho admitted that he is still holding out for a new attacking player who is capable of playing in wide areas.

‘The club did a fantastic job by getting three of them which is very difficult with the crazy market where we are now,’ said the United manager.

‘To get three out of four, I thank the club for that.

‘I’ll be happier if they give me four out of four.’
