Chelsea legend Didier Drogba proved there is life in the old drog yet as he scored a stunning goal for Phoenix Rising in the United Soccer League (USL) on Saturday evening.

The 39-year-old, who has scored four goals for the Rising since joining as a player and co-owner in April, has always been known for his incredible knuckleball free-kicks.

But he scored perhaps his best ever with a bullet shot from fully 35-yards that flew over the wall and buried itself in the top right corner of the goal.

The obscenely powerful effort gave the goalkeeper, Clement Diop, no chance, conjuring memories of his famous efforts against the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham and Hull City during his Premier League career.

Drogba netted after just 13 minutes away to LA Galaxy reserves, with the side bagging a second goal to record a 2-0 victory.

‘These are the things you need to try, and when you try it there’s more chance for you to score,’ he said afterwards.

‘This is something that you work on in training. But I’m really proud of the boys. The way we worked today was fantastic, and I’m really happy with the result.’

Drogba was famous for his free-kicks while at Chelsea, almost inventing a new way of striking the ball – side-footing it with extreme power – and has added another stunner to his collection.
