Thibaut Courtois has promised the Chelsea fans he and the rest of the team will learn from the mistakes they made against Arsenal in the Community Shield.

Arsenal came from behind to beat Chelsea on penalties after the game ended 1-1 after 90 minutes.

Chelsea fans were perplexed to see Courtois step up to the spot before the goalkeeper skied the ball over the bar.

It helped Chelsea on their way to defeat and Courtois issued a statement to the Blues faithful after the disappointing result.

Chelsea open their Premier League season against Burnley at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Antonio Conte had already defended his goalkeeper after the penalty miss.

The Chelsea boss insisted Courtois was one of his best penalty takers and was fully prepared to take on the challenge.

‘Courtois is one of the best players to kick a penalty,’ Conte said after the game.

‘If you have a player that shows you during the training session to be one of the best, you pick him to play, to shoot the penalty.

‘Don’t forget also that Morata is a forward and he did the same.’

Chelsea ended last season by losing the FA Cup final against the Gunners and will start the new campaign on the back of another defeat to their London rivals.
