Three current Manchester United stars managed to agree on six players who deserve a place in a greatest XI plucked from those who have played for the Red Devils in the Premier League era.

Juan Mata, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling were tasked with selecting the perfect side.

Considering Manchester United have won 13 Premier League titles there was certainly no shortage of options.

But they all managed to agree on over half the team.

The trio all selected David De Gea, Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic in defence.

It was perhaps surprising that none of them considered Jaap Stam, Gary Neville or Peter Schmeichel worthy of place.

Jones called De Gea ‘the best goalkeeper in the world at the moment’ when picking his XI.

Mata and Jones both picked Steve Bruce but Smalling went for an unexpected choice. ‘You’ve got to back yourself,’ he quipped after naming himself in his XI.

In midfield they all picked Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs – players with 25 Premier League titles between them.

Both Jones and Smalling also picked Michael Carrick, whereas Mata went for Bryan Robson.

‘Carrick is the most under-rated player I’ve seen in my life,’ said Jones. Smalling agreed: ‘So underrated.’ Mata added: ‘I call him the quarter-back. The way he plays, he never misses a pass, he plays forward. He’s very, very good.’

The final player they all picked was the recently departed Wayne Rooney.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who won the Ballon d’Or during his time at Old Trafford, was perhaps the biggest name to miss out. He made it into two teams but was overlooked by Jones.

Mata, Jones and Smalling were asked to pick their XIs to celebrate Virgin Money and Manchester United’s first year of partnership. In addition a team selector tool called ‘United By You’, has been created to allow fans to build their ultimate starting Man United best XI from the Premier League era.
