Kieran Trippier is set to miss Tottenham’s opening Premier League fixture against Newcastle United due to an ankle injury, according to reports.

The right-back was forced off in the first half of Tottenham’s 2-0 win over Juventus on Saturday and was forced to leave Wembley on crutches wearing a protective boot.

The Daily Telegraph claims that Trippier is ‘not optimistic’ about being fit in time for Spurs’ trip to St James’ Park on Sunday.

Tottenham, meanwhile, are waiting for the swelling on Trippier’s ankle to reduce before he undergoes a scan to assess the full extent of the damage.

Trippier’s injury means Tottenham are without a recognised right-back for their opening game of the season and Mauricio Pochettino has admitted that he will not call on Kyle Walker-Peters to deputise.

‘He is very young. To give him a great responsibility, I think it’s too much for him,’ said the Spurs manager.

‘He’s a player that needs to work with us and maybe start to play in different games.

‘In the case of Kieran being weeks away from the team, we cannot think that only Kyle can replace him.

‘We are working [towards signing players], and we were working before, to try and find a solution.’
