Romelu Lukaku has enjoyed a productive start to his Manchester United career but he’s unlikely to miss a better chance than the one he spurned against Real Madrid throughout the rest of his Old Trafford days.

The £75million summer signing from Everton has scored twice in pre-season already and was selected to spearhead Jose Mourinho’s attack against Real Madrid in the European Super Cup.

Trailing 2-0 courtesy of goals from Casemeiro and Isco, the Belgium international was presented with a glorious opportunity to bring United back into the contest when Keylor Navas could only parry Paul Pogba’s header straight into the striker’s path.

Seven yards out and with the goal at his mercy, Lukaku spooned his effort way over the Real Madrid crossbar with his unfavoured right foot, much to the hilarity of opposing fans and to the horror of himself and his new supporters.

Luckily for the 24-year-old, he was quickly able to make amends when he gobbled up a similar chance three minutes later after Navas failed to deal adequately with a Nemanja Matic piledriver and Lukaku gratefully gobbled up the rebound.
