Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has been accused of pressurising Tottenham defender Danny Rose into an explosive interview attacking the club.

Rose, 27, gave a stunning interview to the Sun on Wednesday when he said he will consider leaving the club because he is underpaid and misses the north of England.

The defender earns around £65,000-a-week with Spurs but knows he could double his money with a move to the likes of Manchester United or Manchester City.

United and Chelsea have been heavily linked with a move for the defender in recent weeks and Mourinho is known to be an admirer of the England international.

Many have questioned the timing of Rose’s interview but Roberts – who won the UEFA Cup and two FA Cups during six years with Spurs – says Mourinho was behind the defender’s comments.

‘Not missing north a year ago when signs 5 new deal now wants to think about going north as misses home I think agent and Jose [Mourinho] in ear!,’ said Roberts on Twitter.

‘For the record I don’t think Danny will go his [he’s] a sensational player but not great to do what has done with this interview as been told to.

‘lt’s two days before season starts if you love your team mates/club you don’t do interview like that.

‘If I done a interview like that 2 days before the season started Maxi miller and Stevie P would have been having more than words with me.

Tottenham are desperate to keep hold of Rose having allowed Kyle Walker to join title rivals Manchester City in a £50m deal earlier this summer.

Spurs are yet to make a signing this summer and Rose criticised the club’s strength in depth, adding that they needed to add proven players.

‘I am not saying buy ten players, I’d love to see two or three — and not players you have to Google and say, ‘Who’s that?’ I mean well-known players,’ said Rose.
