Arsene Wenger has refused to rule out the possibility of delving back into the transfer market, but admits any new arrival at Arsenal will have to be an ‘exceptional player’.

The Gunners secured deals for Alexandre Lacazette and Sead Kolasinac earlier in the summer but the club are still being linked with a host of names.

Wenger may have ended the pursuit of Riyad Mahrez this week, but Thomas Lemar and Jean-Michael Seri are two players attracting interest from the north London outfit.

Arsenal kick-start the 2017-18 campaign on Friday night with a home fixture against Leicester City and Wenger is content with his squad going into the new season.

However, the Frenchman admits we could yet see a new signing arrive at the Emirates.

‘We are open to an exceptional player,’ Wenger told Sky Sports. ‘However, just to remind you we have 33 players here and they are all good players.

‘That’s unmanageable so to bring one more player in for the sake of it would be stupid, but if we find an exceptional one, we will do it.’

Wenger’s side drastically underperformed last season and finished outside of the Champions League places for the first time under his leadership.

But Arsenal enjoyed a productive pre-season schedule and beat London rivals Chelsea in last weekend’s Community Shield to maintain their momentum going into the new season.

When asked what the victory over Antonio Conte’s side means for the Gunners, Wenger said: ‘It will increase the belief but then you face a shock when the league starts.

‘Let’s focus on Leicester on Friday but let’s not forget we’ve had difficult starts at home in recent seasons.

‘We have been shocked a few times but the target this time is to start in a strong way against a very difficult team in Leicester.

‘It’s an opportunity but it’s also tricky because if you don’t win it’s a bad start. The best therapy is to win and it would be fantastic.

‘It’s an important game for us because afterwards we go away to Stoke and to Liverpool. The fixtures are difficult at the start so it’s important.’
