Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has called on his midfielders and wingers to contribute more goals as he hopes to recreate the success he had at his previous clubs.

The Red Devils struggled for goals last season as they only managed to finish 6th in the Premier League, ending with the worst scoring record in the top seven.

Mourinho’s side were often overly reliant on Zlatan Ibrahimovic to find the back of the net and have spent big on a striker this summer by replacing him with Romelu Lukaku.

Still, the Portuguese is under no illusions that the rest of his squad need to start contributing more in that department and has warned everyone that they will need to improve in the season ahead.

‘What I had in other clubs was more players scoring goals, what we had was midfielders, wingers scoring, central defenders scoring goals at set pieces,’ Mourinho said.

‘We always had more goals with wingers, midfielders getting ten goals, central defenders getting five goals and last season that didn’t happen much. We were focused on the striker scoring goals and when it didn’t happen we were in trouble.’

Ibrahimovic ended the campaign with 28 goals in all competitions, with the next best tally being the 11 each contributed by Marcus Rashford and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Paul Pogba was signed from Juventus in an £89million deal and scored nine in total last term, but United will certainly look to him as one player who could be doing better in the opposition penalty area.
