Zlatan Ibrahimovic looks set to rejoin Manchester United (Picture: Getty

Jose Mourinho has confirmed Manchester United have held talks to re-sign free agent Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The Swede was released by the club in July after rupturing his knee ligaments in a nasty fall against Anderlecht in April.

The 36-year-old scored 28 goals during his debut season with the club and was expected to sign a new one-year deal before the injury complicated matters.

Romelu Lukaku was signed as Ibrahimovic’s replacement but Mourinho says the Swede could rejoin the club for the second half of the season.

‘You know he’s injured, he needs time to recover, he’s not ready to play tomorrow,’ said Mourinho.

‘It’s not something urgent, that we are desperate to have it done or not done, I just think that he was very clear by showing what he did last year was not enough for him.

‘He thinks he can do more and wants more at the highest level so we are having conversatins and we are discussing the possibility of him to stay with us for the second part of the season.’

United begin their Premier League campaign by hosting West Ham at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The Red Devils have a clean bill of health barring long-term injuries to Luke Shaw, Ashley Young and Marcos Rojo.
