Jurgen Klopp is eyeing a move for Napoli star Lorenzo Insigne should the club be forced to sell Philippe Coutinho, according to reports.

Coutinho has handed in a transfer request and is attempting to force his way out of Liverpool, prompting Klopp to turn to a former Arsenal target.

Barcelona have made two failed bids for the Coutinho, but is expected to return with a third bid for the playmaker after he issued Liverpool with the transfer request last Friday.

The Mirror claim Klopp is making contingency plans should he lose his best player and Insigne is the German’s top potential replacement for Coutinho.

Insigne has enjoyed a tense relationship with Napoli despite being their captain on the pitch.

The 26-year-old was threatening to leave in March if Napoli did not sit down and discuss a new contract, but Insigne has since settled again.

Insigne’s agent insisted earlier in the summer he was not interested in a move, but Liverpool feel the £100million boost they would receive from the Coutinho sale would give them enough funds to tempt Napoli to sell.

The Italy international is reportedly valued at around £60m by his club, but it is possible Napoli would block any and all moves for Insigne with the new season underway.

Insigne scored an excellent 20 goals and provided a further 12 assists from the left wing for Napoli last season.

Should a move for Insigne come to nothing, Klopp is ready to move for long-term target and Schalke midfielder Max Meyer.

Unlike Insigne, Meyer does look set to leave Schalke for a club of his choosing after refusing to sign a new deal with his side.

The German, 21, would be open to joining Klopp who tried to sign him as a teenager at Borussia Dortmund.

Another Bundesliga star, Julain Brandt is another option for Liverpool as they continue to prepare for the possibility of Coutinho’s exit.
